Cheung created 'Revelations', his first series of pyrographic etchings, in response to the 2008 economic recession. Drawing on the media language that described the failure of the banking system as “the end of capitalism”, Cheung searched to bridge a contemporary and classical ideas of “the end”. Revelations reinterprets Albrecht Dürer’s series of woodcuts, 'Apocalypse', 1498, digitally manipulating the imagery to increase its hallucinant and delirious quality. These altered compositions are then burnt into wooden panels papered with collaged stock listings using a laser – an act of destruction creating an image of destruction.
