Without Karl Marx, the communist party – found in most countries – would not exist in this world. That being so, Niwa proposes to celebrate Karl Marx’s birthday at the local offices of the Japanese Communist Party. Through this action the artist reveals how awkward it is to talk about communism in Japan and the disparity between historic and contemporary socialist ideals.
