'Vanishing Point' is comprised of a map of Hong Kong inhabited by fictional monoliths emblazoned with an apparition of Motoko’s face, the main character from cult animé film 'Ghost in the Shell'. The film is set in a future city based on the skyscrapers of Hong Kong. The compressed city is composed of layered expressions of humanity, history and civilisation, forming a feedback loop that we collectively redefine, but which also simultaneously defines our identities. The image of Motoko is taken from the instant in which Motoko looks up, breaking the fourth wall, seeing another version of herself in a building, sparking the profound existential questions of “who, why and what am I?”, universal questions of consciousness. These are questions Hong Kong has always faced when it was a British colony, and now as a returned part of China. 'Vanishing Point' was executed one year before the Hong Kong protest movement was initiated.
