Description:
Kathryn Garcia is inspired by her travels to ancient and sacred places. She uses a variety of media, including site-specific performances, videos, sculptures, and drawings. Garcia’s work examines the ‘feminine archetype and its relationship to human consciousness.’ Her body, or the bodies in her drawings, ‘are created as vehicles for spiritual experience [to] become a sacred site.’ Garcia represents the female body as sacred to ‘challenge the historical narrative’ and to ‘enact the numinous power of female sexuality.’

Bio:
Kathryn Garcia was born in 1978 in Los Angeles. She now lives and works between Los Angeles and Ibiza. Early in her career, Garcia worked on projects with Javier Peres, Emi Fontana and Rirkrit Tiravanija. She has exhibited across the United States and internationally. Most recently, Garcia created a solo exhibition titled The Feminine Divine (2020) at GAVLAK in Los Angeles.

Press:
Kathryn Garcia’s drawings in colored pencil are clear descendant’s of Judy Chicago’s feminamorphic abstractions, depicting geometric shapes in configurations that suggest a woman’s body, but also spiritual diagrams. They channel a distinctly female power.
