People who looked for a better life and didnʼt get it depicts an array of individuals in profile who toiled without ever achieving the better life they perhaps deserved. The figures in this piece are notably created using painted wooden relief, suggesting tangible life or physical presence. Conversely the figures in the accompanying painting, titled People who looked for a better life and didn't get it - Not in this world (This is a true picture) - presented opposite one another in the exhibition - are rendered in a flat, painterly surface, evoking a spiritual realm beyond this world. The elongated title and depiction, evoking a stained glass window, suggest they may have had to look to the afterlife to find the better life they had searched for. Whilst Dial was not particularly religious, he but made many works on the enigma of life after death, and the problematic nature of spiritual reward for good behavior in a society that was unjust.
