Stephanie Temma Hier

The paintings of Stephanie Temma Hier emerge from a multitude of seemingly disjointed sources; pop culture ephemera, stock imagery, temporary tattoos, canonical material. Her practice reflects the experience of traversing digital space in the 21st Century, exploring contemporary imagery consumption and visual culture in the Information Age, in which meanings fluctuate as images are brought together temporarily by seemingly indifferent big data algorithms to hierarchies of high and low culture values.

"Stephanie Temma Hier’s playful works celebrate fish, vegetables, grains, flowers, and fruit, and seek to remind us of the natural, earthly origins of the things we consume. She creates whimsical, ceramic frames that transform her paintings of seafood, lemons, delicata squash, and bok choy into fantastical, often humorous sculptures. A painting of cauliflower bushels is turned alien by a broccoli frame in one piece, while in another, ceramic fried eggs formally echo a painted field of daisies creating a confused sensory experience. Stephanie Temma Hier (b. 1992, Canada) lives and works in New York. She holds a BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design University, Toronto, and studied at the Academy of Art Canada, Toronto. Hier has exhibited at international venues including, Antoine Ertaskiran (Montreal), Thierry Goldberg (New York), Plus One Gallery (Antwerp), Bureau (New York), The Kitchen (New York), Museo della Frutta (Turin), The Power Plant (Toronto), and Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto). She is the recipient of multiple grants from Canada Council for the Arts and the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, and has participated in residencies at Hospitalfield (Scotland), Shandaken: Stormking (New York), and Salon Nino Mier (Cologne). Hier was a finalist for the RBC Painting competition in 2016 and 2018.
