Victoria Lomasko’s drawings come from her celebrated 2017 graphic novel Other Russias. Over a ten-year period Lomasko travelled her home country, creating portraits of members of Russian society from disparate corners via interviews and sketches. The book presents a collective reflection of an array of forgotten groups she encounters – sex workers in Nizhny Novgorod, slaves in Moscow, schoolchildren in desolate villages, as well as LGBT activists and ultra-nationalists. Lomasko attends protest after protest, unpicking the circumstances and motivations of the demonstrators against the backdrop of an indifferent state.
