Monday 16 May 2017 | Sorel Etrog Panel Discussion

Sorel Etrog panel discussion | 16 May 2017 at Edel Assanti from Edel Assanti on Vimeo.

In conjunction with the exhibition 'Doors open from the inside only', curators Melissa Hamnett (V&A), Daniel Herrmann (Whitechapel Gallery) and Dr Jon Wood (Henry Moore Institute) discussed the works of the celebrated artist Sorel Etrog (1933-2014).

Melissa Hamnett is Curator of Sculpture at the Victoria and Albert Museum. She is also Governor of the Decorative Arts Society, 1850-Present, and advises on public sculpture projects in the UK and abroad. Melissa has spoken and published on 19th- and 20th-century sculpture, specialising particularly in the links between British and French output. More recently, she has focused on the production, consumption and display of works by the New Sculpture.

Daniel Herrmann is Curator of Special Projects at the National Gallery. He previously held the position of Eisler Curator and Head of Curatorial Studies at Whitechapel Gallery. Daniel relates the historical collections to contemporary art and culture through collaborations, exhibitions, displays, residencies, research and interpretation.

Dr Jon Wood is the Head of Research at the Henry Moore Insitute in Leeds. He is co-editor of the Sculpture Journal; specialising in twentieth-century and contemporary sculpture. Jon coordinates the Institute’s research programmes whilst also curating exhibitions and developing the Leeds Sculpture Collections.

'Doors open from the inside only' was the artist's first solo exhibition in Europe in nearly 40 years, staged in collaboration with The Estate of Sorel Etrog. Through a selection of bronze sculptures, paintings and drawings, accompanied by artists' books and archive materials, the exhibition presented a survey of Etrog’s engagement with Existentialism at the peak of his career.

'Sorel Etrog: Doors open from the inside only' was on view at Edel Assanti from 28 April - 16 Jun 2017.
