Taking compositional form from a diagram of bulb planting for perennial flowers, in Lasagne Lewis carefully renders layers of bulbs, with crocuses, hyacinths, daffodils and tulips standing proudly at the soil’s surface. In a ‘gardener’s lasagne’, bulbs are carefully chosen in order of their flowering period. Rather than planting one type of bulb that might only bloom for three weeks, layering the bulbs like this will result in a constant, changing array of flowers that last up to three months throughout the spring. ‘We’re constantly told at college to think about where things come from, and how to nurture and grow them,’ says Lewis.
