Ghost/Red Route began after Lewis repeatedly noticed white-painted “ghost bikes” chained to railings around Bow Roundabout near his studio - memorials marking where cyclists had died in traffic accidents. Although the painting may appear to have been quickly composed, it was one of the most physically demanding works to fabricate. Using a bicycle found in the canal beside the studio, Lewis dismantled and flattened its components over several weeks, spray-painting its silhouette directly onto canvas before restretching it onto the frame. The surrounding bouquet emerged from foliage cut near the canal and dahlias from his own garden, referencing both roadside floral tributes and the cycle of seasonal return; together their colours echo traffic lights, while the red and yellow bands beneath the figure recall road markings, slightly sloping uphill. The figure itself remains largely transparent and unresolved, obscured by flowers: ‘Rather than clutching the bouquet confidently, its weak hand looks cold, as though it’s trying to loosely comfort itself,’ remarks Lewis.
