Thornton Dial: From Bessemer to the Cosmos

Exhibition walkthrough

In this film, Phillip March Jones, founder of MARCH Gallery, discusses From Bessemer to the Cosmos – the first UK solo exhibition of large-scale paintings and assemblages by the late American artist Thornton Dial (1928–2016), organised in collaboration with MARCH Gallery.

Coinciding with the tenth anniversary of Dial’s passing, the exhibition brings together a selection of major, largely unseen works produced during a pivotal decade of his career, from 1988 to 1998.

The film also features commentary from artist and friend Lonnie Holley, art historian and William S. Arnett's son Paul Arnett, and artists Alvaro Barrington and Tau Lewis, whose practices have been shaped by Dial's distinctive aesthetic and approach to art making.
